Joël is an independent artist born in Suriname who moved frequently between the Netherlands and Belgium, never truly feeling like she belonged anywhere. From a young age, music became her refuge—singing at home, writing poems, participating in contests like the Junior Eurosong Festival of the Netherlands (2009), and briefly joining a choir in Suriname. Through her mother, she discovered Gospel and 90s R&B, inspired by Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Karyn White, and Vivian Green, drawn to the genre’s smooth sound and timeless focus on love. As she grew older, Joël navigated her own experiences with love, heartbreak, trust, self-love, anxiety, and sadness, turning to songwriting as an emotional outlet. She began releasing music in 2022 and continues to explore and refine her sound. Her airy, soothing harmonies and soft vocal tone are designed to create intimacy and comfort, inviting listeners on a journey of connection and reflection. Heavily inspired by artists like Jazmine Sullivan, SZA, Mahalia, Odeal, Leon Thomas, and Victoria Monét, Joël blends heartfelt emotion with groovy, uplifting energy.
